Surf Witches find their place on 'male-dominated' waves at Gold Coast beaches


Congestion on the Gold Coast is not limited to roads and railway lines. A backlog of surfers waiting for the perfect wave can create tension along the city's iconic beaches, especially for the less experienced.

This "undercurrent of competitiveness" is something that Jacki Casey said she had felt since she started surfing in January.

"[It's] amplified when you're surfing and in the ocean because you're kind of beholden to the elements of nature," she said.

"There can be one good set of waves every 20 minutes on a bad day, so you're competing with one another for these waves.
