Maribyrnong residents return to ruined homes on river as Victorian floods continue


It's the thick sludge, drying in the calm sunshine, that you notice first. Then you realise outside every house are endless piles of sludge-covered beds, couches, TVs, exercise equipment, children's toys and clothes — everything that made up someone's life — now listless on the pavement.

The piles are chest-high, coincidentally the same height as the water that flooded this bend in the Maribyrnong River on Friday morning, destroying the homes that these residents cosily went to sleep in on Thursday night.

"Nearly everything we own is [piled up] in the driveway," Paul says, standing on his front step.
