Why the Indian Premier League has been such a huge success

T20 cricket

The fact that the IPL that it has taken off in a country where the cricket board was not happy with the very concept of T20 illustrates that the story of the tournament's success is an illustration of the potent combination of luck and serendipity.

Since 2008, the majority of world-class cricketers around the world have taken a collective break from national and international cricket in order to take part during the Indian Premier League (IPL) which takes place mostly during a two-month window between March between March and May. This means that for this time , the IPL has been the focal point for the eyes of cricket fans throughout the world. As we look back, though it's not surprising that viewership in cricket should be in favor of a shorter format, it wasn't apparent at the time. In actual fact, it's to be quite remarkable that there was a time when the BCCI and India were not awestruck by the appeal of the T20 format initially.

One of the main reasons for the popularity of the ipl champions list and T20 format and T20 format, as has been the case with a number of commercial goods, is due to timing. When the millennium began, millenniumthe last semblance of a devoted audience for the first-class cricket game in England began seeing lower turnouts. Particularly, younger generations were moving to other sports rather than cricket. The marketing manager at the ECB, Stuart Robertson, suggested looking at a compressed format which was more in line with current demands of the moment. After a year, despite some resistance from county chairmen on the occasion of some last-over slogging this format got an ear .

International cricket did not take the format seriously . The first T20 international featured mirthful scenes. Also, there was a mock red card to Glenn McGrath for impersonating the infamous underarm experience.

In the last few years, most nations had performed their initial T20 match, attracting the attention of both confusion from their fans. India was one of the last "big" nations to host its first T20 game. The domestic version, however, was a disappointing in the water . "T20? Why not ten-ten , five-five as well as one?" thundered Niranjan Shah during the 2006 International Cricket Council (ICC) board conference. After which he boldly proclaiming that India could not be a part of the format. The rival Indian Cricket League, which was gaining momentum but was quickly taken out of business by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Also it was apparent that the ODI format had stalled. Australia were sleepwalking to their third successive World Cup and was the best team in an event with a few surprises to come; the ICC's various attempts to increase the excitement of the game (supersub superseries on field restrictions and the list goes on) didn't hit the mark. India was terribly disappointed when they was eliminated in the group stage. It made the tournament less appealing to the various stakeholders. The absurd 2007. World Cup final served as the perfect example of everything that went wrong with the over-milked cash cow that was the ODI format.

In this context there that the T20 format caught the public's imagination. What is the reason, it's hard to believe that India did not want to about putting on a team the first World T20 and had to be subtly forced to do so by former ICC vice-president Ehsan Mani. India decided to send a squad which smelled like the disdain of the BCCI were feeling towards the latest format . The team, led by an untrained young greenhorn MS Dhoni, did not include the batsmen who were the stars of the tournament .

Because the IPL does not match the domestic structure that are common to all cricketing nations the presence among the top players is practically guaranteed. It is no surprise that the West Indies players are some of the most sought-after T20 stars and the disputes between board and players can only help the IPL's cause. This also explains the friendship among the English players and cricketing elite. Prior to the IPL which English players have either usually required to pick all ipl winners over their domestic commitments , or disregarded completely. Thus did the IPL make the perfect storm, and then become the most unique league in world cricket.
