Smith eventually apologised to the Academy and his fellow artists, but not specifically to Chris Rock. "I would like to apologise to the Academy," he stated in an emotional apology. Please accept my sincere apologies to all of my other nominations. "This is a breathtaking moment, and I'm not crying because I won a reward."

"I've been known all my life to love people, to protect people, and to be a river to my people," Smith said in his rambling address. I understand that in order to perform what we do, you must be able to take abuse. You have to be able to get people to talk about you in a weird way. In this job, you must be able to deal with men and women who are disrespectful to you. And you have to chuckle and seem as if everything is alright."

Will Smith was likely to face suspension or expulsion as a result of this incident, therefore he resigned from the Academy on Friday.
