British rock band Mungo Jerry made an entrance into the music industry when they released “In The Summertime” as their first single in 1970.

The song was composed and written by lead singer Ray Dorset and celebrates the time of year everyone loves - summer! It reached the number one spot on music charts across the world, including when it spent seven weeks on the UK Singles Chart.

“In The Summertime” also spent two weeks on a Canadian Chart and was number three on the United States Billboard Hot 100. Since then, the single has sold more than 30 million copies.

The song’s success is impressive considering Dorset said it only took ten minutes to write using a second-hand eclectic guitar. He wrote it while taking time off from working in a lab for Timex.

It has been covered by other artists, including reggae musician Shaggy and Australian rock band The Mixtures, but there is no mistaking the original version.
