There is a time to get serious about training and shouldering the burden of pistol marksmanship, but there’s also a time to just enjoy shooting for the sake of it. For that, a good rimfire is hard to beat. The Kel-Tec PMR-30 is one such pistol. It’s a full size, double-stack pistol chambered in the flat-shooting.22 Magnum (also known as the.22 WMR). The pistol uses a hybrid blowback/locked-breech system of operation that is capable of operating with a wide range of ammunition from low-power plinking loads to high-strength hunting and self-defense ammunition.

The pistol has a capacity of 30 rounds and features a fully-ambidextrous safety lever that operates by thumb. It’s Beste Kel-Tec PMR-30 22mag winkel Nederland easy to use and, unlike some pistols with this type of safety, can be operated with gloves on. The trigger is crisp and single-action, with a light four to six-pound pull on the copy we tested. The sights are Hi-Viz brand fiber optics, and the front sight is drift-adjustable for windage. The pistol is also rail-ready and has a handguard that can accept auxiliary lighting or other accessories.

Its light weight, small size and magazine capacity make it an ideal trail gun. It can be easily slipped into most backpacks or utility bags with a spare magazine and a box of ammo. And the pistol offers minimal recoil and muzzle rise, making it a good choice for older or arthritic shooters.

For those who prefer a traditional double-action pistol, the PMR-30 is available with an optional bolt release on the left side of the frame. The pistol’s magazine drop is on the bottom rear of the well and is easy to operate, even with gloved hands. The trigger is smooth, despite being slightly longer than average, and has a good amount of over-travel stop.

One thing that sets the PMR-30 apart from other Kel-Tec offerings is its unique grip design. It is long back to front and has a textured pattern of large polymer squares that the company calls checkering. While it may take some getting used to, the grip is actually very comfortable, particularly when shooting a rimfire.

While many defenders decry all rimfires as useless for personal protection, a properly loaded PMR-30 can be quite useful. Its combination of size, light recoil and capacity makes it a good option for the kind of defense most people will need when confronted by a coyote or other varmint. That said, the pistol is not likely to be effective against threats larger than a coyote or other small critter. For those situations, a bigger gun with a bit more stopping power is probably a better choice. But the PMR-30 is an excellent choice for hunters and backcountry travelers who want a reliable gun to carry around in case they encounter a bear or other more dangerous predator. It’s a fun little gun to shoot and, even when carried in the backcountry, is surprisingly accurate.
