The cable car was carrying six children and two adults on their way to school in the mountainous region of Battagram, Pakistan, when one of its lines snapped early Tuesday morning. A passenger, identified only as Gulfaraz, raised the alarm and residents used their cellphones to call state officials for help.

The army dispatched commandos who rappelled from helicopters but were hampered by strong winds that destabilised the vehicles as they tried to approach the car. When night fell, the effort was shifted from airborne to ground-based operations using a chairlift and zip line.

The passengers were given food and water and some of them received oxygen as a precaution, police said. The kids were handed over to their parents, many of whom broke down in tears. Earlier, they had been huddled together, terrified in the dark, fearing that they would be killed. "I just want my children to go back to school," said a woman named Aisha. "I was worried all day." Several onlookers jumped into the gorge to rescue passengers from the car, and videos on امداد خودرو ساوه social media showed one child leaping out of the car and then clinging to a rope suspended from a helicopter before being flown away.
