Byugen, Thao, Nguyen, Nguyen, and Thao Discuss Their Careers


 

Byugen is a multi-disciplinary computational science laboratory located at the University of California, Berkeley. It is a world-class group focused on developing foundational and applied research in computer vision, machine learning, and image understanding. Its members have authored and co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, with over 2,200+ citations. Their work has been recognized by awards and accolades, including the Google Fellowship and Microsoft Research Asia Fellow. In addition to their research, Byugen’s members have contributed to open source software projects and community organizations such as Wikimedia, the Free Software Foundation, and GitHub.

Nguyen has coached the inside linebackers at Texas A&M since 2010. In his first season, the Aggies won the Big 12 championship and defeated nationally ranked Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas, and Texas Tech. Nguyen’s team also boasted a top defensive unit with 11 players receiving All-Big 12 honors, which is a school record.

He is the author of https://byugen.id The Angry Black Vietnamese Man: A Cultural Memoir, published in 2015. The book recounts his experiences growing up in Vietnam during the Communist era. The author says the memoir is a way for him to pass along his heritage to younger generations. The book has received critical acclaim, and Nguyen plans to continue writing.

Nguyen is a proud US-Vietnamese, and he uses his platform to speak out on social issues that affect his community. He writes to give non-Vietnamese Americans context about the Vietnamese people in the United States, and he also aims to educate Asian-American youth about solidarity with other groups.

Thao has starred in more than 30 TV shows and movies, including NCIS: Los Angeles, Boston Legal, Two and a Half Men, Pushing Daisies, Austin Powers in Goldmember, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. She has also hosted the annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon and Southern California Special Olympics Summer games. In addition, she has raised money for charities and organizations such as Oxfam America through her music.

She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and she has won two Golden Globe Awards. In 2009, she was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album. She has also received an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Orange Is the New Black.

Nguyen is a graduate of Santa Barbara High School and the University of Southern California. He competed in gymnastics and earned a spot on the German junior national team. He trained at the regional training center of TSV Unterhaching, where he worked with coaches Andreas Hirsch and Jens Milbradt. In 2011, he competed in the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships where he won the gold medal on parallel bars. He has also won a number of international and domestic competitions, including the Munich Cup and the Austrian Championships. In his free time, Nguyen enjoys playing guitar and piano. He is married to his college sweetheart Becky and has three children.
