What Does an Orthodontist Do?

A beautiful smile is more than just a nice-looking face; it also reflects your overall health. Crooked teeth, or malocclusion, can lead to many dental problems, including tooth decay and gum disease. You can correct these issues with orthodontic care. A dentist specializing in this field is called an orthodontist. Orthodontists are trained to diagnose, prevent and treat dental irregularities and help identify problems that may develop in the future. They work with people of all ages, from children to adults.

Generally, an orthodontist will use medical dental devices like braces and aligners to correct the bite of patients. They can also use removable appliances, such as headgear and plates. Their treatment plan depends on the severity of the case and how long it will take to achieve the desired result.

In addition to straightening crooked teeth, orthodontists can correct speech or eating (oral function), improve the long-term health of gums and teeth, treat abnormalities that may cause excessive wear or strain on teeth, prevent long-term chewing or swallowing problems, and fix an improper bite (occlusion). They can also close large gaps between teeth, make sure that the tips of the teeth are aligned and correct a narrow jawline.

Orthodontic treatment is not a quick fix; it can take anywhere from 12 to 24 months to straighten your teeth. However, a skilled orthodontist can often shorten this timeframe by using specialized procedures. Moreover, the length of your treatment will depend on the condition of your teeth and jaws and the type of orthodontic appliance you receive.
