Best RPG for Android and iOS 2018
One of the hardest genres of mobile RPG games to find on the Android and iOS platform are good role-playing games that can be played offline. From my experience, finding the best mobile RPG is even more difficult that finding a good RPG. I will provide the ten best offline RPGs that can be found on Android or iOS platforms. As someone who travels a lot, I look for a long game in order to immerse myself so I can keep myself entertained on a long and exhausting flight. My goal is to be able to start the game when I take off and finish it when I land or at least get as close to finishing the mobile RPG as possible.
Every game on this list will also have offline capabilities so you can play it wherever and whenever you want. Since most role-playing games are story focused I will make sure that I do not spoil the story for those who have not played the game before. I will also rate each game on a scale of 1 to 10 based on five categories: gameplay, graphics, controls, story, and length. The reason length is an important factor is because it’s a mobile game. Most of us don’t have the time to finish a 60+ hour mobile game.

Chaos Rings III – $19.99
The best RPG for Android and iOS is Chaos Rings III by Square Enix. Square Enix is a leader in RPG’s and their entrance into the mobile market gave every mobile RPG fan a new place to start. If you haven’t played Chaos Rings I, or II then I highly recommend you to do that since these games are also absolutely fantastic. All of the Chaos Rings RPGs are so amazing that they all deserve to be rated as number one, but the one that left an everlasting impact on me was Chaos Rings II. When I first started Chaos Rings III I was skeptical because the Chaos Rings II was fantastic. I was not very impressed with the beginning of Chaos Rings III but the more I played the more emotionally attached I became to the characters and story.
Chaos Rings II was definitely a lot more dramatic than III, but III’s characters were so lovable that I ended up playing through the whole story in one sitting. I was extremely lucky to get great SR cards that made it so I don’t have to stall and grind for 10 hours. The significant difference between Chaos Rings II and III is that Chaos Rings III is visually superior and the atmospheric difference in the story. Chaos Rings II was a lot darker than Chaos Rings III, but the exciting and energetic feel to Chaos Rings III really made it the Best RPG for Android and iOS.
Chaos Rings comes with an immersive story that will suck you in for hours and consistently make you feel a wide range of emotions. Very few mobile RPG games have what it takes to emotionally draw me into the story and no story does it better than Chaos Rings II and III. Also, this mobile RPG has some of the most beautiful art I have ever seen in any mobile game.
The only negative thing I have about Chaos Rings III is that it becomes a little bit of a grind and some research may have to be done in order to clear some stages. This actually might be appealing to some people, but to most mobile users it is not appealing because it slows down the completion of the incredible story by at least 20 hours. However, there has never been a game in my life where I completely lost track of time and did not care how long it took to beat.
If you haven’t yet, then please give this series a try!

The World Ends With You – $17.99
The next game on this list is The World Ends With You. I spent many nights debating if Chaos Rings III or The World Ends With You is the best mobile RPG for android or iOS. My conclusion was that I was more emotionally attached to the Chaos Rings series than The World Ends with You. Before I played The World Ends with You, I played Chaos Rings I, and II. Both of these games really drew me into the series and there was no coming back.
The reason this absolutely incredible mobile RPG came second was because of my own personal bias of the story. The story in Chaos Rings III had a greater impact on me than The World Ends With You. The controls of The World Ends With You left me frustrated at the beginning and had me drop the game for a few hours before I picked it up. I am really glad I kept giving the game another shot as it was absolutely incredible. The control porting from DS to Android was probably not the best.
The World Ends With You is a unique mobile RPG due to its gameplay style as well as its creative story. Although tedious at first on mobile, it redeems itself with a fantastic story that provides a few days worth of gameplay with challenging boss fights. Another awesome part of the game is that they were able to copy the city of Shibuya, Japan very well. So if you love Shibuya, Japan or if it’s on the bucket list then go ahead and play. I definitely have some bias because I played this game while I was flying to Tokyo.

Adventures of Mana – $13.99
The next mobile RPG on the list is Adventures of Mana. There is no game out there that is as cute and appealing as Adventures of Mana. Adventures of Mana’s appeal is its overall simplicity with a heartwarming story that keeps you on your toes throughout the whole game. Another amazing aspect of this game that makes it stand out is its music. I don’t know if others do this but, I normally end up muting my phone’s sound because of how repetitive the music is. In Adventures of Mana, the music may be repetitive at times but the beauty of it makes it enjoyable.
Adventures of Mana was a little difficult to play on a phone, but I had a lot more fun playing on my tablet.
A small tablet like the Galaxy Tab S2 provided the best gameplay because it was just the perfect fit for this game. If you enjoy a strong main character with an in-depth story then you should definitely consider Adventures of Mana. There is a reason why this game is one of the best mobile RPG’s on the market.

Final Fantasy VII – $15.99
I was so happy when one of my favorite Final Fantasy games got ported over to mobile. If you want to enjoy a great game and bring back awesome memories then download Final Fantasy VII on your phone and have a blast. I was so happy going through the story and seeing every character I once loved so much. The port over was visually fantastic and the controls are fair. I wish the controls were slightly better, but it doesn’t really ruin the overall experience of the game.
My biggest complaint about the game is that the borders on the side of the game are blue and it may get irritating after staring at your screen for a while. Luckily, I did not experience any severe bugs, other than one crash an hour and a half in which was annoying because I lost thirty minutes of gameplay.
Those who have previously played Final Fantasy VII on a console will truly enjoy the mobile remake. It is truly one of the best RPG for Android and iOS.

Zenonia 4 – Free
I can literally make a list of ten great mobile RPG games by Square Enix, but I’ve got to hand it out to GAMEVIL Inc. for Zenonia 4. The game is extremely fast-paced and its fantastic combat will keep you hooked. This mobile RPG game is visually pleasing with some of the best controls in any mobile game. If you have not played Zenonia 4 then go and download it off of the play store as it’s free. The game is extremely addicting and I promise you won’t put it down.
I prefer Zenonia 4 over 5 for the sole purpose that you can play Zenonia 4 offline. The choice of classes and skills to choose from adds a lot of value in terms of gameplay. The four classes to choose from are Slayer, Blader, Ranger, and Druid.
Slayer is for those who like close combat with high damage and critical hits.Blader is for those who enjoy fast-paced combat. The ranger class is what you thought it was. Stay back, kite and kill all monsters in your path. If you like awesome looking skill effects I recommend the ranger or Druide. The Druide is like a mage character that is also ranged. If you’re a fan of mages, then go the Druide route.
Zenonia 4 shines when it comes to difficulty and the fact that it has online and offline capabilities which put it ahead of a lot of other mobile RPGs. Another great feature of Zenonia 4 is the fact that Zenonia 4 has skill builds and talent trees which need some planning. If you’re new I highly recommend checking out some guides out there.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – $9.99 or Free with Amazon
There isn’t a person that doesn’t know about Star Wars, let alone their signature game KOTOR. What I love about this mobile RPG is that the decisions you make in the game decide the end outcome of your story. The reason making your own decisions is important is because of the replay capabilities. If you love the game so much then you can start fresh and experience a whole new storyline. Another great aspect of the game is that you can pick a class that is tailored to you. Furthermore, I have not found a game that was initially designed for a different system to run so well on Android.
Another aspect of KOTOR that makes it a good mobile RPG is that there are a lot of game elements that a player may want to pursue all the different abilities you can unlock. The reason I did not rank KOTOR higher on the mobile RPGs is that I personally do not find the gameplay as engaging as the other games.
KOTOR’s story is fantastic and the gameplay is great, but I do not feel completely drawn in. I could stop playing KOTOR at any time. If I stopped playing the other great RPGs I would be thinking about the game all day until I pick up my phone again. KOTOR never gave me the urgency to keep going on, but don’t let that stop you from playing such an amazing game.

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions – $11.99
If there is any game that heavily impacted my life it was the original Final Fantasy: Tactics. I first got introduced to it in middle school and it was by far one of the most memorable games I have ever played. The controls were superb, and it also required a decent amount of strategy which kept my young self, busy for weeks.
After picking up FF: WotL and putting the time into it I realized it was a great game that had me looking back at how much I loved playing good mobile RPGs with a mix of strategy. There is no other game that does this as well as Tactics.
If you want to play a game that requires critical thinking with a fantastic story, then War of the Lions is the game for you. The only issue I had with mobile RPG was that it was just too long. Some battles would last hours and would become more exhausting than enjoyable. This may not be a con to many people who want a game where they have hundreds of hours of content to clear. However, since I am very limited on time I want to finish my games in under 50 hours max.
Every time I thought I was getting closer to the end, it turned out there was a whole new plot twist or extremely long battle. If you have time to sink, then I highly recommend it as it took me over seventy hours to complete the mobile RPG. I hate not finishing a game so I pushed myself through it, and I don’t think I will sink that much time towards a single mobile RPG again.

Legend of Grimrock – $4.99 (IOS ONLY)
Good thing I have an iOS device from work or I would have missed out on this charm. What’s unique about Legend of Grimrock is that every step of the way you’re falling into new traps. In addition, the movement is tile based and combat is in first person. One reason Legend of Grimrock is a good RPG is that it has sophisticated puzzles that will keep even the most skilled puzzle solver entertained. If you’re a lover of puzzles and riddles with a touch of fighting then this is the game for you.
The Legend of Grimrock is 100% trial and error based. For example, if you put skills in the wrong areas you will be handicapped later on in the game. The same process applies when creating in-game parties. Some classes are better than others at certain stages of the game.
What made Legend of Grimrock shine is the unpleasantness it provided when venturing off to new unexplored territories. The dark environment really adds a sense of fear that makes this game stand out. I highly prefer this game to be played at night or when the lights are shut off on the airplane.

Baldur’s Gate II – $9.99
Baldur’s Gate II is a strategic and exploration mobile RPG that provides a PC role-playing game experience to it. I know many of you would are upset with me because Baldur’s gate is ranked low on my list. Baldur’s gate would be one of the best computer role-playing games ever for its time.
To anyone who hasn’t played Baldur’s Gate then you must give it a try. The game has fantastic graphics, but weird controls and the additional content added along with the enhanced edition definitely made it worth the time.
The Dungeon and Dragon’s mechanics make the game feel a bit intimidating and the fact that I can spend a lifetime trying to complete it. When I think of mobile RPG’s, I think of a game that I can finish playing in a few days. A few days of gameplay for me is between 8 to 15 hours.
Baldur’s gate is a fantastic PC game and I sincerely believe that the game is more enjoyable on the PC than it is to mobile. However, that should not stop you from getting the game. If you are away from a desktop due to work or school then give this great RPG a shot. I promise that you will not be disappointed with one of the best RPGs of all time.

Evoland – $4.99
Although I enjoyed Adventure of Mana more, Evoland definitely deserves to be on this list. If you want to feel nostalgia then you have to give Evoland a try. The most amazing part of the game is that the graphics improve through every step of the game. Also, the gameplay changes with every dungeon within the game so you are always glued to the game. It brings back memories of Zelda and also gives vibes from one of my favorite games, Final Fantasy.
Evoland is a good RPG with a fantastic story that every RPG fan needs to download. When I first started playing the game, it felt like I was playing a Pokemon game. The more you progress into the game the more fantastic it becomes. I felt like I played Pokemon, Zelda, and Final Fantasy within one game.
Evoland may be on the bottom of the list but that does not mean it’s a bad game. Download Evoland to experience unique gameplay that will keep you glued to the game until you finish.
