What you eat and what you don't eat in large part determines whether you develop heart disease. Here are a few tips to help you keep the number one killer at bay.

CUT THE FAT:

That means a total cholesterol intake of fewer than 300 milligrams a day and a total intake of less than 30 percent of total calories a day.

EAT YOUR FRUIT AND VEGGIES:

A Dutch study of more than 800 men between the ages of 65 and 84 found that the more bioflavonoids these men consumed (they got them from tea, onions, and apples), the less likely they were to die from heart disease.

DON'T FORGET THE GARLIC:

Several studies indicate that one-half to one clove of garlic, eaten daily, can significantly lower total cholesterol. High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease.

Of course, if you suspect you have a heart problem you should see your Doctor right away.

NEW HEALTH TIP

Your immune system needs a steady and balanced intake of essential vitamins and minerals to keep it working properly to provide protection from infections and diseases.

There are many factors that can have an adverse effect on our immune system: excessive intake of alcohol and caffeine; ingestion or inhalation of heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, and mercury; and tobacco smoke or other forms of pollution in the air.

When pollutants or toxic substances are absorbed by the body, they threaten the effectiveness of the vitamins and minerals in food and are sometimes described as antinutrients.

To keep your immune system working efficiently, follow this simple eating plan.

EAT PLENTY OF

1. Protein-rich food.

2. Citrus fruits for vitamin C.

3. Vegetable oils for vitamin E.

4. Spinach, sweet potatoes, and carrots supply beta carotene.

CUT DOWN ON

1. Animal fats, sugar, alcohol, caffeine, and highly processed carbohydrates.

Follow this simple plan and you will have a very healthy immune system.
