Just about the only way that it could become part of this event would be if a shark were released into the pool. Featuring such extreme sports as aggressive inline skating and freestyle Moto X dirt biking, the X Games are where speed metal meets speed medals. An affinity for Roman numerals notwithstanding, this is the Olympics for a generation more familiar with the intricacies of Moto X Best Trick than modern pentathlon--but make no mistake: Whatever generation you represent, you'll come away awed by the unbridled athleticism on display here. Think of it this way: If the Olympic motto is "faster, higher, stronger," the X Games add "crazier" to the mix. Aug 5-8; from $5. Michael Wilbon: Hello everybody...we've got to do something of an abbreviated chat today because of the PTI schedule (Jim Boeheim of Syracuse is our guest) so I'll hit as many topics as I can in 30-plus minutes...I'm glad we're starting with the dunk contest, which used to be one of my favorite things in sports...but we're talking about the 1970s (ABA) and 1980s. There's just nothing fresh about it now. I think as a basketball culture, we're just dunked out. And LaBron needs to worry about leading his team to the playoffs, not wearing himself out in the dunk contest...I understand your question, though, about following the great dunkers...but it's so passe now...It's time to put the dunk contest to bed. _______________________ Ashburn, Va.: Michael - With the USA Hockey team poised to face the Russians a day before the 26th year anniversary of the Miracle on Ice, I was wondering whether you thought perhaps USA Hockey might be better served to go back to using Amateurs that have played together for a meaningful (e.g., six months) period of time. Sure - they would be playing against pros - but you could say about our Miracle team who beat a team who would have been pros if not for the cold war. 26 years ago our all-stars couldn't beat the Russians. Why not go back to amateurs playing for USA in hockey - what do we have to lose? | |||||||
