Building Your Personal Work at Home Ethics for a Successful Freelance Career

Whether you’re handling your own internet-based business, or you’re providing services for a company online, it’s important for you to have self discipline when you’re working at home.

Set-up and official work room or corner

Even if you’re working at home, it’s actually best to keep a working station. This means allotting a private space for yourself where you won’t be easily disturbed by family members, television sets, noises and other factors that can disturb you away from working.

Perhaps the biggest obstacle for people who work at home is making their families and friends understand that they’re still professionals even though they’re homebased. As much as possible, make your work room or corner look and feel like an office.

Don’t put unneeded gadgets like game consoles and television sets lying around in your work desk because they can be highly tempting especially when you’re trying to beat a deadline.

If you can, lock your work room door or put a "Don't Disturb" sign so no one can come in and disturb you without knocking first. Set up a different phone line if you must for business calls. Avoid using your “business phone line” for personal matters unless it’s a matter of life and death.

Keep official working hours

Although one of the perks of working at home is having flexible working hours, studies show that it’s actually easier to “get into the momentum” when you keep regular working hours. It doesn’t have to be as conventional as your old 8 to 5 office hours in the past, but you need to make sure that you spend at least 8 hours a day, five days a week on your business or job especially if it’s your only source of income.

When you’re working, it’s safer to inform friends that you can be contacted only through your email. The lesser phone calls you need to deal with, the better effort you can put into your online homebased work.

Make sure that you keep track of your progress

Even though you’re in a significantly more casual set up, you can’t afford to be careless when it comes to tracking your operation costing and monthly revenue. Aside from making you tax accounts easier to handle, keeping a concise record also helps you see your progression as a professional.

Remember that although you’re working “informally” at home, you’re still pulling efforts to pay for bills. As a freelancer, you’re paid only on commission, and unless you make an effort to keep track of your output and your income, you might run short on cash.

Personal deadlines and goals are important

Even if a client doesn’t give you a due date, and although you’re not directly competing with a colleague while you’re working at home, remember that you’re still not totally free of competition. If anything, you’re competing with a wider range of internet entrepreneurs and service providers.

A sure way to step up on the game is by setting goals and deadlines for your self. By doing this, you remain competitive and wanted by prospective clients online.

Accomplishing personal deadlines and goals when you work at home also keeps you feeling satisfied as a professional.
